How many tiles do you need — and what will they cost?

How this tile calculator works

The calculator multiplies your room length by its width to get the floor area, works out the area of one tile from its size, then adds your waste allowance: 5 percent for a simple layout, 10 percent as standard, or 15 percent for diagonal and complex patterns. If you enter a price per square foot, it also estimates the material cost for the area including waste.

How many tiles do I need?

These worked examples use 12 x 12 inch tiles, which cover 1 square foot each, with the standard 10 percent waste allowance.

Tips before you order

Order all your tiles from one dye lot so the color stays consistent, and keep a few spares for future repairs. The same count math works for renter friendly flooring ideas such as peel-and-stick and loose-lay floors, and for a peel-and-stick backsplash project, where the calculator counts wall tiles just as well as floor tiles.

Tile calculator questions

How many tiles do I need per square foot?

One 12 x 12 inch tile covers 1 square foot. A 12 x 24 inch tile covers 2 square feet, so you need half as many.

How much extra tile should I buy for waste?

Add 10 percent for straight layouts and 15 percent for diagonal layouts or rooms with many cuts.

How do I calculate tiles for a wall?

Measure the wall width times its height, just like a floor, and enter those numbers in the calculator.

Does the calculator work for peel-and-stick tiles?

Yes. The count math is the same, just enter the peel-and-stick tile size.

Can I calculate in meters?

Yes. Use the toggle at the top of the calculator and the tile sizes switch to centimeters.
