The number of tiles you need is your floor or wall area divided by the area of one tile, plus extra for cuts and breakage. Enter your room size and tile size below and this free tile calculator gives you the tile count and, if you add a price, the material cost in one go.
Tile & Flooring Cost Calculator
How many tiles do you need — and what will they cost?
How this tile calculator works
The calculator multiplies your room length by its width to get the floor area, works out the area of one tile from its size, then adds your waste allowance: 5 percent for a simple layout, 10 percent as standard, or 15 percent for diagonal and complex patterns. If you enter a price per square foot, it also estimates the material cost for the area including waste.
How many tiles do I need?
These worked examples use 12 x 12 inch tiles, which cover 1 square foot each, with the standard 10 percent waste allowance.
| Room | Floor area | Tiles to buy |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom 5 x 8 ft | 40 sq ft | 44 |
| Room 10 x 10 ft | 100 sq ft | 110 |
| Room 10 x 12 ft | 120 sq ft | 132 |
| Kitchen 10 x 15 ft | 150 sq ft | 165 |
| Room 12 x 14 ft | 168 sq ft | 185 |
Tips before you order
Order all your tiles from one dye lot so the color stays consistent, and keep a few spares for future repairs. The same count math works for renter friendly flooring ideas such as peel-and-stick and loose-lay floors, and for a peel-and-stick backsplash project, where the calculator counts wall tiles just as well as floor tiles.
Tile calculator questions
How many tiles do I need per square foot?
One 12 x 12 inch tile covers 1 square foot. A 12 x 24 inch tile covers 2 square feet, so you need half as many.
How much extra tile should I buy for waste?
Add 10 percent for straight layouts and 15 percent for diagonal layouts or rooms with many cuts.
How do I calculate tiles for a wall?
Measure the wall width times its height, just like a floor, and enter those numbers in the calculator.
Does the calculator work for peel-and-stick tiles?
Yes. The count math is the same, just enter the peel-and-stick tile size.
Can I calculate in meters?
Yes. Use the toggle at the top of the calculator and the tile sizes switch to centimeters.
